NASHIK: The detection rate in vehicle theft cases has been poor in the last seven years even as cases are rising, data available with police shows. Police registered 4,632 cases of vehicle theft and managed to detect only 971 cases, which is a mere 20.96%, in the last seven years.
Last year, police registered 602 vehicle theft cases but only 160 could be solved, thus highlighting the poor detection rate, that is 26%.
Last month, 46 cases of vehicle theft were registered and police could detect only five.
Senior police officers said that they were taking various steps to curb the crime. Shortage of secure parking areas is among the main reasons for rising incidence of vehicle thefts. However, vehicles are also stolen from secured parking lots and even when they were parked in front of citizens’ homes, said the officers.
